The Waugal is the rainbow serpent in Noongar Nyitting that created the rivers, waterways, and lakes on his journey from the hills to the ocean.

From this story, we learn the traditional Noongar practice of throwing a handful of sand into the water when visiting a river or other water body. This is to say kaya/hello to Waugal and let him know that we are visiting this water.

You can create your own Waugal using playdough and some colourful paper, leaves, or other material you have around the house. There are a lot of beautiful leaves on the ground you can use during Mookaroo, the wet and cold Noongar season for June/July.
